Description:

The Flood Control District of Maricopa County (District) conducted the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel (ACDC) Area Drainage Master Study in June 1992. The study indicated this project to be completed along with upstream improvements such as 10th Street Wash Basin. These basins were constructed by the District and City of Phoenix (Phoenix). The portion of the 10th Street Wash between Alice Avenue to ACDC remained unimproved, and created a floodplain south of Butler Avenue.

The 10th Street Wash project is located within the City of Phoenix and includes 3,000 feet of wash improvements starting just south of Alice Avenue along 10th Street down to the ACDC. Most of the project was constructed within the available street rights-of-way.  The completed project accommodates up to the 100-year frequency storm event and:

  • eliminates an existing floodplain containing 84 homes and commercial properties;
  • eliminates an existing hazard of a deep and unsafe open channel;
  • provides positive outfall for the storm drain coming from the east along El Caminito Blvd.;
  • enhances the quality of life through diminishing the impacts of flooding; and
  • increases opportunities for multi-use corridor facilities.
  • Phoenix requested this project to be included in the District’s Prioritization Process for the Fiscal Year (05/06). The project was cost shared equally between the District and Phoenix.

    Status:

    The project is complete. The city has taken full responsibility to own, operate and maintain the project.
