The Hawes Road Drainage Improvements Project was identified in the East Mesa Area Master Drainage Master Plan (ADMP). The East Mesa ADMP identified drainage problems and solutions for eastern Maricopa County, which includes portions of Mesa, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. The project resolved many of the existing drainage problems along Hawes Road within the City of Mesa and unincorporated Maricopa County. The project consisted of a 100-year level of protection channel and culvert improvements from Apache Trail to Emelita Avenue, which is approximately 0.4 miles north of Southern Avenue. The 1.1 mile-long project ties into the existing improved gunite -lined channel on the west side of Hawes Road, at Emelita Avenue. The project was jointly constructed by the City of Mesa and the Flood Control District. The District was the lead agency for design, construction, and construction management. The City of Mesa shared in the cost of the flood control features and assumed ownership, operation and maintenance of the completed project.
