The Alma School Drain was originally constructed by the Salt River Project (SRP) in partnership with the City of Mesa and primarily served to discharge flows from the Tempe Canal into the Salt River. The drain consists of lined and unlined channel and, as a secondary function, conveys storm water discharge from the City of Mesa to the Salt River. The District assumed operation and maintenance responsibilities in 1967. In the mid-late 1970s and early 1980s, the District implemented channel modifications and cleared the structure of silt and vegetation. In 2003, the District divested itself of operation and maintenance responsibility and deferred this responsibility to the City of Mesa, the Arizona Department of Transportation, and SRP.Owner and Maintenance: City of Mesa, ADOT, SRP
