Project Type: Study
Project Description:
The Flood Control District is updating the floodplain for the Myrtle Avenue Wash between State Route 51 and the Arizona Canal. This half-mile area includes neighborhoods south of Myrtle Avenue to Aurelius Avenue.
This study uses the most recent engineering data to refine the 100-year floodplain and floodway, helping property owners and the community better understand local flood risk.
Project Results
Updated modeling shows that:
- Some areas previously mapped in the FEMA 100-year floodplain are no longer included
- Portions of the existing floodplain and floodway have been reduced
- Areas of shallow flooding were identified where FEMA does not require flood insurance
- Revised maps reflect more accurate flow rates and conditions based on the latest studies

Previous Work (Summary)
The Myrtle Avenue Wash update builds on earlier phases of the Cudia City Wash Area Drainage Master Study (ADMS) and the Design Concept Report (DCR).
ADMS (Completed 2020)
A restudy of the 1994 drainage master plan covering 13 square miles across Paradise Valley, Phoenix, and unincorporated Maricopa County. The ADMS updated watershed conditions and identified areas for further refinement.
DCR (Completed 2022)
Focused on Cudia City (Echo Canyon) Wash Zone 4. Work included:
- Evaluating FEMA floodplains for possible redelineation
- Conducting additional technical analysis
- Developing preliminary design concepts and cost estimates to reduce flood risk
