Project Description:

The purpose of the McMicken Dam Rehabilitation Project is to provide for the overall rehabilitation of the McMicken Dam Project and in coordination with project stakeholders and with public input, improve the function and benefits associated with the current McMicken Dam Project.

The McMicken Dam Project was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1954 to protect Luke Air Force Base, the Litchfield Park Naval Air Facility and agricultural activities in the area from flooding. The McMicken Dam Project also provides flood protection for critical public facilities, infrastructure and properties located directly downstream, including significant portions of Surprise, El Mirage, Sun City and unincorporated Maricopa County.  Its aging infrastructure, land subsidence, earth fissuring, urbanization encroachment and current dam safety standards has impacted the ability of the McMicken Dam Project to maintain the current level of protection in the long term.  These dam safety issues have led the District to determine that an overall rehabilitation of the dam is required. Landscape and multi-use opportunities will also be evaluated.
